SKRC House Rules
- The fact that the repairs are being performed by unpaid volunteers reflects the allocation of risks and limitation of liability: Neither the organisers of the St Kilda Repair Café/e nor the repairers are liable for any loss that may result from advice or instructions concerning repairs, for the loss of items handed over for repair, for indirect or consequential loss or for any other kind of loss resulting from work performed at the Repair Café/e. The limitations set out in these house rules shall not apply to claims declared justified on the basis of liability arising by virtue of applicable consumer protection legislation which cannot be lawfully superseded.
- Repairers are entitled to refuse to repair certain objects.
- ALTERATIONS are NOT completed at this event, only repairs.
- Clothing or textiles for repair MUST be clean and washed before they are brought in.
- The organisers may take photographs or videos during the repair session, and these may be used for online or in-print news and promotional materials. If you do not wish to have your photograph used, please contact the Repair Cafe Co-ordinator.
- The Repair Cafe works are performed free of charge. A voluntary donation is appreciated and goes towards buying consumables and shared tools for volunteers etc. If the repair requires a new part such as a lead, plug, fuse etc, any materials supplied must be paid for.
- The Repair Cafe works are performed by community volunteers. Our volunteers are not professional repairers and will conduct a repair to the best of their ability, within the time and resources available at the Repair Cafe event. We do not make any representations as to the skills or qualifications of our repairers. Attendees offering broken items for repair do so at their own risk. We offer no guarantee that the objects repaired in the Repair Cafe will work properly at home.
- The aim of the Repair Cafe is to help an item be functional, not restored to original condition. If you are after a perfect fix or perfect finish, we recommend seeking a professional repairer and paying for their service.
- To minimize waiting times during busy periods, a maximum of ONE broken item per person will be examined. If additional items are brought in to be fixed, the visitor will join the back of the queue for each subsequent item.
- We encourage attendees to try to learn to carry out the repairs themselves whenever possible; repairers on site will help and guide as necessary and/or try to carry out the repair. Attendees conducting repairs themselves do so at their own risk; the organisation and volunteers are not liable for any loss resulting from the work performed by the attendees.
- Repairers are not obliged to reassemble disassembled appliances that cannot be repaired. Attendees of the Repair Cafe are solely responsible for the tidy removal and disposal of broken objects that could not be repaired.
- Parents and guardians are responsible for the supervision, behaviour, and safety of their children while at the Repair Cafe site. Children may not be left unattended.
- Electrical items that will be used MUST be submitted for PAT testing before leaving the premises.
